How do I make an appointment at the
Memory Assessment and Research Center?
Call (949) 824-2382 Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM and speak to one of our friendly patient care coordinators.
What information do I need in order to make an appointment?
Please have the following information available:
Patient information (name, address, and telephone number)
Date of birth and social security number
Insurance information (name, policy/group number)
Primary doctor information (name, address, and telephone number)
All of these pieces are necessary to complete the scheduling process.
What does the evaluation involve?
The evaluation includes three components:
- Neuropsychological assessment – An examiner will administer a variety of paper-and-pencil tests to assess your memory and thinking skills
- Neurological examination – Our neurologist will evaluate your physical well being and functional nervous system.
- Family conference – Our neurologist and neuropsychologist will give you the results of the assessment, including the labs and any brain imaging. You will receive the diagnosis and recommendations suited to you. If eligible, you will also be invited to volunteer for any our ongoing research studies.Note: We do not provide continuing care. All recommendations will be sent to your primary care doctor or neurologist for follow-up.
How long does the evaluation take?
A complete evaluation, from start to finish, takes from 4-6+ weeks to complete. Depending on the tests required for the evaluation, the time from the first appointment to the family conference may be slightly longer or shorter. The amount of time required to complete each component of the evaluation is:
Neuropsychological assessment – 2-2.5 hours
Neurological examination – 1 hour
Family conference – 2 hours
Separate appointments are required to complete each of the three evaluation components. The neuropsychological and neurological examinations are scheduled on consecutive days. The family conference is scheduled 4-6 weeks thereafter , once all additional test results are received.
How long before I get my results?
You will receive your results in person during your family conference, which will be held 4-6+ weeks after your initial visit. Written results will follow the Family Conference.
Will my HMO cover the cost of the assessment?
HMOs (e.g., Secure Horizons, Kaiser) do not cover the cost of the evaluation; however, we will attempt to order any additional tests (e.g., brain MRI, blood work) through your primary care physician to minimize costs. Special financial arrangements can be made in advance. Depending on individual policies and coverage, Medicare may cover up to 70-80% of the assessment process, with any supplementary insurance picking up the difference.
Consult with your insurance provider for questions regarding coverage for services.
Do I need a referral from a doctor to schedule an appointment?
No, you can be self-referred.
What if the person with cognitive impairment is non-English speaking?
Special arrangements can be made for patients with limited English language skills.
