How to Support the Institute

As the Institute strives to develop new techniques to advance the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and the related dementias, resources and financial support are often limited. Donations to the Institute have helped to allow clinical and basic science research activities to forge ahead as we work together to fight against this devastating disease. Some people have given direct donations, some have asked that memorial donations be sent in lieu of flowers, and some have left money to the program as a bequeath. There are many ways to support the Institute through donations, each helping to shape the future of our research. If you wish to support Alzheimer’s disease research at UCI, you may do so by sending your tax-deductible contribution to the Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia, payable to the UCI Foundation. All donors are acknowledged in the Institute’s bi-annual newsletter. For more details on how to make a donation please contact us at the UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, by calling (949) 824-3251 for more information.

Memorial Donations

What a wonderful way to commemorate a loved one and to help support Alzheimer’s disease research. Many families choose to make a lasting donation in memory of a friend or loved one in lieu of flowers. If you have lost a loved one and would like to have memorial donations sent to The Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, please follow the simple process as shown below:

  • Please make checks payable to: UCI Foundation
  • Indicate on the memo line of the check: Alzheimer’s disease research
  • Include with the check:
    • Name of the individual in whose memory the donation is being made
    • The name and address of where you would like the acknowledgements to be sent
(i.e. name of spouse/ family member of individual in whose memory the donation is being made)
    • Donor’s information Donor’s Name
      • Donor’s Address
      • Donor’s City, State and Zip
      • Donor’s telephone number

Once the memorial donations have been received, a thank you acknowledgment is sent to the donor. In addition, a thank you acknowledgment is also sent to the person to be acknowledged on the individual’s behalf, so that they know that a donation has been made. All donors will be recognized in the Institute’s bi-annual newsletter.

Other Ways to Give

Gift Pledges

A pledge is a formal statement of intention to make a gift. It may be followed by an immediate gift or it may simply confirm your intention to make a gift in the future. Many donors choose to complete their gift pledge by making regular payments over time.

Gifts with Retained Interest

Your gift can allow you to hold an interest in that gift for your lifetime or for a specified term of years. After that time, the funds become available to the specified project or program. For example, you can set up a charitable trust that allows you to receive income from that trust for a specified period, or for life.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts are gift arrangements that have specific tax advantages and often include lifetime income to a beneficiary or beneficiaries named by the donor. Many UCI Donors have utilized planned giving methods and are enjoying the benefits today: capital gains tax savings, increased income and income-tax savings.

Gifts of Endowment

A gift of endowment is a fund that is maintained in perpetuity, and only a portion of the annual investment return is used for the purposes specified by the donor. The rest of the investment yield is returned to principal. Thus, over the years, the fund can grow and hopefully keep up with inflation. Such endowments, which typically bear the name of the donor or donors, reflect your interest and serve as an enduring testament to your generosity.

Appreciated Securities

A gift of long-term appreciated marketable securities help you save taxes twice. Such a gift will provide an income-tax charitable deduction and capital gains tax savings.

Gifts of Real Estate

When you give a gift of your home or real property, you may claim an income-tax charitable deduction based on the full market value of the gift, avoid capital gains taxes, and eliminate certain costs associated with the transfer of real property. Gifts of real estate can also provide income to you.

Unrestricted Gifts

When you do not restrict the use of your gift, the Institute gains flexibility not otherwise available. The unrestricted gifts can be used to meet the changing or urgent needs of the Institute.
