What do I need in order to make an appointment?

All of these pieces are necessary to complete the scheduling process.
What does it involve?
The assessment is a three-part process that involves:
- Neuropsychological testing - which consists of tests to assess your memory and thinking skills
- Neurological testing - examines your physical well being and balance, etc.
- Family conference - where the doctor will give you the results of the assessment, the labs, and any possible brain imaging, the diagnosis, and make recommendations that are appropriate to your case. Also at this time you will learn about ongoing and upcoming volunteer opportunities for our research studies. (Note: We are not a continuing care program. All recommendations will be sent to your primary care doctor or neurologist for follow-up.)
How long does the assessment take?
A complete evaluation, from start to finish takes from 4-6+ weeks. Depending on the tests necessary for evaluation, it may be slightly longer or shorter. Individual test times range as follows: Neuropsychological testing - 2-2.5 hours; Neurological examination - 1 hour; Family Conference - 2 hours. The three-part process takes place on three separate days, with the Neuropsychological and Neurological parts on consecutive days. The Family Conference takes place 4-6 weeks after the examinations and after all additional test results are received.
If I am with an HMO provider, what part is covered?
The cost of an evaluation will not be covered by your HMO. However any additional tests ordered (e.g. brain MRI, blood tests, etc.) will be attempted through your primary medical doctor to alleviate some of the costs. Special financial arrangements can be made in advance. Depending on individual policies and coverage Medicare can cover up to 70-80% while supplementary insurances may cover the difference. Coverage may vary based upon individual policies. It is best to consult with your insurance provider for questions regarding coverage for services.
How long before I get my results?
You will receive your results in-person during your family conference which will be held 4-6+ weeks after your initial visit and your written results will follow.
Which types of insurances do not cover the costs of the assessment at UCI?
